The sheer size of the radar of an E2-D Hawkeye (for example) will always be needed, even if it is staying nearer to heavily defended airspace and de-conflicting friendly assets.

What will happen though is that when LIDAR and other laser based ID systems become more mainstream, is that we will see smaller assets doing the job that once took an airliner.

(Getting tagged at 440 miles is no joking matter, especially in a non-laser/lidar low observable airframe)
