I just had the chance to skim through snippets of the book "Dreamland: The Secret History of Area 51" and at the bottom of page 456 it is revealed that the US Air Force applied the codename Stingray to a secret effort to create a combined test force at Edwards Air Force Base to prepare for flight tests of the B-21 Raider there. The application of the USAF codename Stingray to this CTF for future testing of the B-21 Raider at Edwards Air Force Base is basically reminiscent of how the Pentagon used the codename Aurora for funding B-2 procurement, but unlike the Pentagon codename Aurora being erroneously associated with a supposed hypersonic spyplane by some media reports, the Stingray codename was kept under wraps and became one of more than 4,600 suggestions for an official for the B-21. In the end, the USAF chose to name the B-21 the Raider because Stingray had already been allocated to the Navy's MQ-25 tanker UCAV.
