Lockheed Martin recently endorsed development of General Electric's XA100 engine, one of the two engines submitted for the competition for the NGAD's engine. Since the USAF has whittled down the NGAD competition to two prime contractors, it seems plausible that Lockheed Martin quit the NGAD competition because the USAF is aware of Lockheed Martin being preoccupied with F-35 production. A similar precedent happened with the outcome of the ATF competition, when the F-22 was chosen over the YF-23 partly due to Northrop being too preoccupied with B-2 development to be burdened with another expensive stealth warplane program.
