Doesn't surprise me at all that this is the case. I was out filming the aurora borealis and a couple was out walking their dog wondering what I was doing with a camera on a tripod facing north. I pointed to the sky and their jaws dropped. People don't look up unless they're expecting to see something and they don't typically look up when airliners are passing overhead. A lot of things fly over at 40k feet or so. It just happens too often to have them crane their necks. This timelapse video took place the night I encountered the couple.
