Don't mistake the US saying nothing in the past for knowing or doing nothing in the past. SIGINT and IMINT related things would likely be classified (because it would technically fall under CI) and if the news media hadn't said anything about it first, chances are we wouldn't know anything about it. I've heard in some quarters that this is not a new thing at all, but news outlets running stories on it is.
