I heard a story once out at Edwards AFB set in the early 90's that had an LR-121 rocket engine between two other BIG engines of some type. I had heard the rocket engine got the aircraft going fast enough to start the big engines. Pretty vague, but when you trade hangar stories at Edwards, you hear all sorts of stuff
