When the USAF devised the Tier system for unmanned aerial vehicles, Tier III called for a stealthy long-range reconnaissance UAV with a wingspan about as big as that of the B-2, and design studies for Tier III embodied the mission that the AARS/Quartz would have occupied The Tier III requirement was split into the Tier II+ and Tier III-, the latter envisioning a vastly scaled down stealthy UAV designed for medium-altitude reconnaissance missions The RQ-3 Dark Star that flew in 1996 was a product of Tier III- and much smaller than either the AARS/Quartz or any design study for Tier III.
