Some are asking about using the M61 on the F-16 to take down the balloon. I try to imagine an F-16 inbound at tactical speed and it seems improbabble for the gun range and the avoidance manuever needed. However, with approach speed, full-flaps, and landing gear out, the roughly 185 fps closing speed may make sense. This might save a couple hundred thousand dollars versus using the AIM-9, but would it be safe to do?
