The only reason I can think of why we have not brought down the balloon days ago is that some sort of threat was made by the Chinese against it. Like it contains a small nuclear reactor or extremely toxic substances that would be released if it is brought down. That threat could be made even while keeping up the bogus "research" story. The technology to bring it down in a controlled fashion certainly exists.
