I've read them. What they don't explain is, what happens to all of the mass that doesn't get vitrified?

They're boring through solid rock. That's solid mass - solid /stuff/. When that mass is heated until it melts a little gas is emitted as vapor, and there is liquid mass (liquified rock), and some of it is used to line the tunnel. But what happens to the rest of it? What happens to the majority of the mass that gets excavated?

Regular digging of a tunnel involves hauling that unused mass (soil, rock, what have you) out of the tunnel through mechanical means. How do the tunnel boring machines do it?
