An increase in (authorized) traffic may be part of the reason for the Back Gate upgrade. Another reason is the incredible increase in tourist traffic since the storm Area 51 event. Back in the 90's Groom Lake Road was by far the more frequently visited gate. Few visitors even knew about the Back Gate, which back then was a very low-key gate with a simple cattle fence (see attached link). In fact the Back Gate saw so little traffic that the cammos had a BBQ behind the small shack, which was located just inside the fence. Today the Back Gate gets a lot more traffic while GL Rd at best sees the same amount of tourists as it did back in the '90s. On weekends I often see dust from three or more vehicles on the BG Rd at the same time.
