Within the realm of the DOD & Intel Communities, you have to consider the types of roles for aircraft that are demanded (Recon/SIGINT/EW/Strike/etc). From there, you can make a wild guess as: With this small exercise, you can see that there were likely plenty of classified aircraft flown and spotted/recorded over the last forty years (whether prototypes or operational). And the reason I bring this up is because I feel a lot of people try to force connections between events or aircraft projects that may not even be remotely connected. We see this with some of the more popular events: Boscombe Down, Amarillo, Wichita, SoCal skyquakes, North Sea, etc. you name it.
- Whether there exists an operational need or development work to be filled by a classified aircraft
- If there exists separate or combined service efforts (DOD vs IC) for an operational need or development work
- How many prototypes were developed and flown for that operational need or development work
- How many operational numbers would be required for an operational need
