Slater Lake is named after Col Hugh "Slip" Slater, who was base commander at Area 51 in the 1960's, during the time of the Roadrunners. The attached link is to Col Slater's bio on the Roadrunners web site. I believe, but am not certain, that the lake is man made. It was used for recreation by personnel staying on base back in the 60's. Then, beginning in the 70's, Russian sites, mostly radar sites, started "appearing" in the area. I understand that some of them are sensitive enough to restrict access to parts of that area today.
