Trying to help out a newcomer to studying the history of Groom Lake who asked me "Was 'Area 51' originally part of the Nevada Test Site or not?". Not having focused on this part of Groom Lake history, I thought the answer was obviously "yes" but it seems more complicated than that re: did the NTS ever encompass Groom Lake, was there an 'Area 51' on the AEC numbering grid for the NTS, etc. Can you experts help me out?
