And as for the DSLR, the specs on the P1000 say that it does not have mirror lockup, so that kind of throws a wrench in my plan. Is all hope lost or is there a chance it will still work alright?

Wow, its crazy how technical this sort of thing can get! I'm really enjoying learning about photography from you all though, everything in this thread has been so helpful.
