That sounds like a good combo for the job. I used to haul my Celestron C-5 up there with a heavy tripod and my Canon 5D MkII. The new mirror-less cameras such as the the EOS R6 eliminate mirror shake. The IS of the 800mm lens is good enough to where you don't need a heavy tripod (I would still take a lightweight aluminum tripod). And the AF makes the most painful part a breeze: Finding the right focus manually.

I hope someone else can chime in with less costly equipment that worked for them.

More important than equipment is weather conditions. Cool weather helps, and calm wind to keep the dust down. You are shooting through 26 miles of air and no equipment in the world can make up for poor visibility.
