First of all, congratulations with the catch! Contrails can form above 40.000 ft, but it’s rare. I’m surprised you could hear the aircraft; if we assume it flew at 70.000 ft and you were still able to hear it, that means it’s not particularly stealthy as that implies it has a very loud acoustic signature. This is especially strange as I would expect the RQ-180 to be relatively silent with it’s hidden, inboard engines to begin with. So, the fact that it produces contrails and produces audible noise suggests that it’s flying at a relatively low altitude; certainly not at 70.000 ft. As so often this raises only more questions, but I’m sure we’ll find out more soon!
