The name Homey is probably derived from the term "Home Plate" that was used to identify the airfield in unencrypted radio transmissions beginning in the early 1960s (if not earlier). The term probably had a double meaning. The base was literally home to the assigned aircraft, and the lakebed is shaped somewhat like home plate on a baseball field.
