The Brits put Sidewinders on their some of their Nimrods during the Falklands War. Not for defense against Argie fighters, but to shoot down Argentina 707s and C-130s used for long range reconnaissance and patrol. One of the C-130s attacked a British tanker, rolling bombs out of the back of the aircraft, in international waters.

If the stories of the PRC strategy to shoot down US tankers, AWACS, and oyher force multiplier aircraft in the event of war are true, then arming those a/c makes some sense.
