In a metro area, my first thought would be a blown transformer. They are surprisingly loud when they go up. On the other hand, there is usually a bright flash and/or flame associated with a blown transformer. Of course the same is usually true with a meteor. I remember the flash seen on videos of the Russian meteor Joerg referenced. Same with space junk.
