The concept of a low observable helicopter goes way back. There was the quiet Hughes 500 in the early 1970s and a RAM-coated OH-6A that was at least ground-tested for RCS measurements. There are rumors that it flew in Nevada during the 1980s (possibly in the 1988-1991 timeframe).

Sikorsky undertook a study of potential stealthy UH-60 configurations in the summer of 1978. The was around the time that the "Stealth Revolution" was really taking off. There were all kinds of projects looking into applying low observable technologies to airplanes, helicopters, missiles, drones, and surface vessels.
