HARMs follow radar beams to their transmission source, so in theory it could be used in an AAM against an AWACS type a/c. That assumes the missile radar receiver was designed to receive the search radar frequency generated by the target aircraft. Question would be whether a missile designed to hit a stationary ground target would have the ability to maneuver to track an aircraft being thrown around the sky (to the extent the AWACS type could be thrown the sky) in an attempt to escape. One assumes Soviet heavy pilots went through fighter affiliation training as our did/do.

Use of a HARM in an AAM role would be the opposite scenario to when our F-102 fighters in SEA used their heat seeking Falcon missiles to locate and attack VC encampments by targeting their campfires.
