They used a throttleable rocket - The normal mach 3 cruise would be under jet propulsion and inflight refuelling via those special T birds.

Then once approaching they would zoom climb to altitude and max out their speed.

Unexpected altitude and speed changes are very bad for intercepts at extreme altitudes.
