A late reply, but possibly useful tot eh conversation. Back in the late 1980s and early 1990s there was talk of a "bouncer" aerospace craft that would dive into the atmosphere to enable it to aerodynamically turn and change course and then climb back out of the atmosphere to return to space flight. I observed a craft make such a maneuver back in 1993-1994 during the early AM hours. It came in looking like a fast moving satellite that suddenly got brighter and then executed a 180 degree turn before dimming to its previous brightness and leaving my field of view after a few minutes. Shortly afterwards several air traffic controllers at my base were awarded medals for their work with "Classified aircraft, Classified mission" during the timeframe that I saw "the satellite do a U-turn." I was at the awards ceremony and the "Classified aircraft, Classified mission" were the exact words the colonel spoke. Go figure.
