Well then, it may have been the X-21 LFC project. Air Research and Development Command awarded a $34 million contract to Northrop in August 1960 to modify two B-66 airframes as boundary layer control research aircraft. The testbed were officially designated X-21A in August 1962. The first flight took place at Hawthorne, CA, in April 1963.
