It sounds counterintuitive, but it happened. After removing any classified avionics and other equipment, the wreckage was sold to the highest bidder in a government scrap auction. F-117A (82-0801) crashed outside Holloman AFB on 4 August 1992. Capt. John B. Mills encountered trouble at the beginning of a night training mission. Almost immediately after takeoff his aircraft went into an uncommanded roll and caught fire. Mills managed to eject safely before the plane plummeted to earth in a sparsely populated area near a trailer park.
