I like your idea of what is essentially an unmanned B-2. What if they just removed an airworthy example from operation with something like...oh say an engine fire. Take said example and install test equipment, like automation and flight hardware and instruments in o one of the bomb bays. Since it is not an "active" example and will only have to drop 1 bomb to prove that it can deliver a payload, this seems reasonable. Both of the crew could still "man" this "test example". They would only intervene if it became uncontrollable or to test equipment and take readings. It could even be installed with newer versions of it's existing engines or even engines of a different or newer design. This would necessitate engine tests at a very secure facility.
