The "No go Navaho" was a program that if publicized, would have put a crimp on the subsequent STS. For those who don't know the Navaho NEVER had a successful launch and was famous for peppering launch block houses at the Cape with bits of it's asymmetrical piggyback ICBM platform. I've talked to pilots that flew downtown in the Thud and it's lack of redundant hydraulics was its Achilles heel. But together with the Navy's A-4 did the job bringing the airwar to the north. BTW the book 'Thud Ridge" is the absolute best narrative of using the F-105 over the north. Yeah, the 107 would have been unusable up there, so the USAF lucked out to have the 105 at the right place, right time. Ditto with the A-4, another platform designed for nuclear ordnance delivery but great for hauling massive loads of dumb bombs. We ran through so many bombs we had to result to using older ones made in WWII that almost cost us an Aircraft Carrier.
