That is what Defense Secretary Gates decided a while back. The F-22, fighter designed to prevail over the Soviet Union had lost it's mission and wasn't worth the cost.

The danger now is that the F-35 continues to see cost rises which may further reduce it's numbers and raise it's cost in a fatal spiral.
