I'm guessing they had some problems with the HUD Point of View Camera's downlink. You could see it cut out before they went back to the long range Infrared or the ground shots. Also, sometime during the descent, NASA TV's commentator said at what times the cameras would pick up the orbiter. The long Range Infrared was at 8 minutes out while the HUD Point of View was only 3 minutes out. That's right over the Cape, so it's not a strong signal. I used microwave transmissions for video before and with an antenna the size of two coke cans stacked, we only had a range of less than half a mile and it was always cutting in and out.
