Polmar has an excellent reputation in the field and equally excellent connections. Not have specific engineering details it is impossible to pass judgement on the theory that the Air Force recordings show two firings of missiles in sequence. I have doubts that the sub could have survived the first such event, but can not test that.

The endless iterations of conspiracy theories is interesting. A month or two before the Navy announced it had located the Scorpion the parents of one crewman were holding on to hope that they had been taken prisoner by the Soviets, a story that was going around amongst the relatives of the crew at the time.
