That brings back fond memories. In the early 1970s, we had a couple pilots from Nellis declare emergencies so they could land at Groom Lake. About the third one to do so, we kept the pilot for several days for debriefing. We kept the plane much longer than that. Nellis brass went ballistic about the CIA holding their plane, but it certainly stopped the emergency landings. The attached photo is the plane parked at Groom Lake. You are right, no one, including Nellis had a clue in those days what was going on. If you've read Davies' excellent book about the Red Eagles, you'll know what I mean.
