Remembering that amateurs talk tactics and professionals discuss logistics, the reduction in cost and exposure to danger of a long supply chain, the ability to ship much fewer "smart" weapons vs. tons and tons of "fire and hope it hits something" munitions is a HUGE force multiplier. Besides the ability to achieve first round hits, less collateral damage, reduced fratricide and civilian casualties, over time the reduction of the number of shells made, shipped, transported, manhandled and fired would probably save much more than the higher unit cost per round.
