It had nothing to do with my day job at Edwards. I took a day of leave from work and attended the launch as news media. I have been covering launches at Kennedy Space Center/Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg for a variety of publications since 1984. There are a number of prime viewing spots on public land in the local mountains and beaches. For this launch, a lot of people went down to the beach at Surf. Another popular spot is TV Hill near Santa Barbara. It takes nearly four hours for me to drive to Vandenberg from Lancaster but it is worth it as long as I get to see something tube-shaped, with fire coming out one end.
