I finally had the time to take a closer look at the power lines document. I agree, the fiber optic ground wires (OPGW) are interesting. The document mentiones they will be added from the Delamar Sub Station to the new Mt Irish switch yard. So they are not going all the way to Rachel to provide real high-speed internet (the existing 1/4 DSL solution for the price of a full DSL line is a joke!). The document never specifically mentions the OPGW lines being used in the new line to Groom, but why else would they run them to the Mt Irish switch yard? I am afraid the new power lines may not be about power at all, but all about secure fast high speed data for Area 51.
