Hmmmmm... Interesting points and observations. I feel that money can do pretty much anything though. And the US doesn't seem to have a shortage on a "defense" budget.

Also, I am under the impression that many of these new and exotic aircraft can very well be "pilot optional" making the human risk far less for any tunnel mishaps..but increasing the risk of the aircraft being damaged since the joystick controller would be slightly less committed since his ass isn't physically on the line.

Something far more affordable would be using a natural valley and stretching a very large, multiple square mile, material/netting between the two hills/mountains. Then just paint the top with toxic F-117 paint ;-)
