No worries about the rental. You will get it dusty, but no chips in the paint. If there is a vehicle ahead of you, you may want to keep some distance to avoid their dust and rocks they kick up. A small car will be fine. If you want to be on the safe side, buy a couple of 5 Gal. fuel canisters at WalMart. Instead of renting an expensive car with navigation system, I think you may be better off buying a cheap GPS on Ebay. You should be able to find a used one that works for the purpose for around $50 or less. And you can program it at home. Temperatures vary, but you can expect night time temps below freezing. Daytime temps in the upper 60's. If you break down on 375, STAY WITH YOUR VEHICLE, unless you are very close to Rachel or Crystal Springs. Your chances of someone stopping are much better if you are with your vehicle. Pop up the hood to indicate you need help. Locals will stop. Sadly, most tourists these days don't any more.
