Being that you are visiting from the UK, I assume you will rent a car. Any car in decent shape will do, even on Groom Lake Road. But be sure to check all fluids and tire pressure before you leave Vegas. Take some extra water, in case you break down. Sooner or later a local will come by and help, but it may be a few hours.

As for the time, if you can arrange a visit during the week you will get more to see. The white bus on GL Rd, Janets going in and out of Groom (from high angle view spots), and quite likely some flight activity from Nellis over the Ranges. And you may even catch a test flight, although the chances for that are slim...
