The Abort Circle (known locally as "The Hook") was first marked on the lakebed surface during Project OXCART. In case someone used up the 6,000-foot pave overrun, he could turn out along the Hook and use the lakebed. The new runway doesn't have a paved overrun, but it does have the painted line on the lakebed.
