Most NDB stations I've seen are a short ( < 50 ft.) vertical wire supported by a horizontal wire of over 100 ft between two poles. The electronics fits in a small box on a short pipe between the poles. A good ground system is required. Electrically it's a 1/4 wave vertical antenna with loading for resonance provided by the horizontal wire. Your description of XSD sounds about right for an NDB.
