The runway at KSC is 15000+' concrete with 1000' overrun on both ends. Width of 300' with 100' asphalt shoulders on both sides. The south end runs off into the Banana River/Intercoastal, the other into swampy Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge area leading to Playlinda Beach.
During the latest shuttle flight with the quandry about landing site availablity, I wondered if Groom is considered as an emergency site for an Edwards overshoot/Whitesands undershoot, as is Patrick AFB and Orlando International (MCO). This would make sense as the runway and rollout areas are more than enough. Thoughts?
