I recorded scaner audio of a test at Groom Lake during my last visit. It was during the daytime. However, they have been known to fly planes that are not secret during the day (i.e. the F117A I photographed, the SU-27 a few of us have photographed), etc. If they test a new engine or avionics during the day, you really can't tell something new is being tested. I think the only time you will really see a substantial secret (i.e. a new airframe) during the day is if it crashes.
