Welcome noobs,
First off you can camp at the mailbox. Steves ranch is quite a ways from the road. The turn out before the signs on GLR as Chris said. In addition you can campout at the Rachel Gate, or Cedar gate. As a matter of fact if your are outside the border you can camp anywhere as its all BLM land. In the many years ive been going to the area I have never been bothered by snakes and have never seen a scorpion.As far as the cammos are concerned the only interaction you will have with them is if you cross the border. Take all the cameras and optics you want. Absolutly no problem there. Dont worry about running into other campers chances are you wont see any. As far as anything flying on Saturday probably not as Nellis shuts down on weekends. It seems the only test flying out of Groom is being done on moonless nights. Be aware that the nights are getting cooler, down into the 30s. Here is the Rachel 7 day forecast.
