Ron, what years did you fly over Kilauea? Before or after the current eruption began in 1983?
I took the southern approach to Pu`u `O`o on the Naulu trail. Went down into the Napau crater and right up to the base of the cinder cone. 15 miles over lava flows, volcanic deserts, a few stretches through rain forests, and nearly 1000 feet up from, and back down to, the trail head at thhe Chain of Craters road. Hot, humid, brutal terrain, and one-plus gallon of water consumed in far less than a day. Freeman was an order of magnitude more man than I ever dreamed of if he really did what he claimed to have done.
