This website will let you know when satellitles are going to fly overhead. It helps to have a radio on WWV or what is commonly called an "atomic clock" to get accurate time since the bird is not visible very long. The high orbit satellites move in a very smooth arc, so they don't look like planes. I don't know if equatorial satellites can be seen with the naked eye. For Heavens-above, the lower the number, the brighter the object. The low earth satellites can be seen during the day, but only as a flash. The Iridium satellite network is famous for this.
