Depends on what you want to monitor. Most of us would consider military air band coverage (225-400MHz) essential, because some of the Red Flag exercises and most of the Area 51 air traffic (aside from Janets) uses that band. Nice to have, but not essential, is Trunk Tracking with P-25 decoder. This will allow you to monitor the NTS radio traffic (but not Groom security, which is encrypted). The only scanner in our store that does this is the Uniden BCD396T. It is quite expensive, but I can highly recommend it. Of course it also does an excellent job on mil. and civilian air band.
