The dry lake bed with practice targets north of Hwy 95 is where they used to do the Capstone live fire exercises (see attached link). They DO drop live ammo! You can sit near Hwy 95 and watch the show. The gated area is the VIP area. They still do the live fire exercises occasionally, but Nellis does not announce the dates to the public any more.
