Area 19 was developed in the mid-1960s for high-yield underground nuclear tests. Although it was nominally assigned to Los Alamos National Laboratory, some of the tests were sponsored by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (whic was assigned Area 20). A total of 35 underground tests were conducted in Area 19. The last one took place in 1992.
