I first read about Area 51 in a book about the U-2 that was published in 1983. It really caught my interest even then. I collected every meager scrap of information I could find in books and magazines. It was all aircraft related then. I tracked down the original USGS 1968 photo in 1985 and used it as the basis for a speculative map of the facility. I queried my contacts at Edwards AFB, but was rebuffed with "no comment." Until the whole Lazar/UFO connection, Area 51 was best known to aviation buffs and Nevada residents. Once the news/entertainment media got hold of Lazar and "Saucer Base Expeditions" to watch UFOs, the publicity just exploded. Area 51 became a pop culture phenomenon. I hate to say it, but without Lazar we would probably still be in the dark about the true nature of Area 51. Thanks to the UFO mythology, people began to make an effort to find the truth. And, eventually, they did. Ex Excreta Veritas
