lone wolf - thanks for all the info. I was thinking more in terms of just Sand Spring Valley.

As you said, you can't live on a mining claim unless you're currently mining. The mining law actually says that mining claims cannot be used for "non-mining related habitation". I guess if I found a mineral deposit rich enough, I could live and mine on it for life!
